Party gear
Your fairy tale costume for Saturday night - you have 12 colleges to compete with, not just in kayaking but in creativity of costume!
Booze, food or money for booze and food, general living expenses
Team spirit, game face, etc!

Bus will be leaving round 1 from the boathouse

Hey guys,

The time has come for VARSITIES! From February 18th-20th all the kayak clubs from the various colleges around the country will descend upon the city of Cork for a weekend of fierce competition (debatable) and party times.

This THURSDAY, FEB 10TH, we will be having a VARSITIES SIGN-UP, POSTER-MAKING PARTY, ALPS PRESENTATION BONANZA !!! It will take place from 18:30 - 20:00 in LTEE2 in the Panos/ Hamilton (apparently they're all part of the one building). Head into the Hamilton, turn right and walk all the way to the end until you see a set of stairs going down on your right. Head down those stairs and... voila!

So,
1) Sign-Up: Bargain price of 40 euro which will include: accommodation in a hostel, breakfasts (yummy fry on Sunday) and transport. Anyone who has registered already can take part in the long distance race on Saturday (literally, anyone can do it- the water is about as challenging and fast-moving as Dun Laoghaire Harbour, ie , NOT!). If there are others interested in coming along and racing, there may still be a chance to register- contact captain@dukc.net as soon as possible. We'll also be cheering on the Trinity team in polo, whitewater and freestyle events.
Theme for Saturday is FAIRY TALES- get to planning the costumes.

2)Poster-Making party: We can't be put to shame by the other colleges- we need the wittiest, most elaborate posters possible- and someone willing to act as club mascot! There will be some supplies but try to bring along any paints, glitter, paper, glitter, glue, GLITTER etc. that you can find.

3) ALPS PRESENTATION: This year will see the club go on a trip to the Alps once again. The trip will take place soon after the end of the exams (late May/ early June) and will be open to those of Level 3 standard plus. On Thursday, club members (incl. our esteemed captain) that went on the trip last year will give a presentation incl. logistics, price, location etc. Anyone interested in the trip should try their best to come along.

Polo session will take place in the pool afterwards, as usual- followed by Mac Turcaills.

SUNDAY TRIP- Anyone interested in getting out paddling this weekend, contact captain@dukc.net or secretary@dukc.net . Usual price of €7 for the bus applies.

HOODIES- We'll hopefully have them by the end of next week. There will be an hour or two arranged for pick-up and payment in the boathouse. Details to follow.

JACKSON'S BOATERX- "Wacko in the Jacko" will take place on Feb 26th and 27th. Level 3 standard +. Anyone interested in competing, get in touch with committee.

That's all for now,

Look forward to hearing from you/ seeing you Thursday,
Áine

Welcome Back from the Kayak Club!

The club had a great Michaelmas term with busy pool sessions, numerous river trips to the Liffey and Wicklow, 'extreme' weekends in Bundoran and Lahinch and, of course, New Years celebrations in Kerry. There were also great competitive performances by club members in the Liffey Descent and the Colligan Gorge games.

The 'big freeze' hampered our plans for paddling in December a bit but now that the snow has melted and we no longer have to crack our paddles through sheets of ice, we're all set to go once more. This weekend sees our big RE-FRESHER RIVER TRIP to the Boyne in Meath.

If you found yourself so swamped by the number of society activities and Ents nights in first term that you never got to join us in the pool or on the river, don't fear. We're running a trip on Sunday, 23rd of January especially for TOTAL BEGINNERS and those who only joined us a couple of times. This is the perfect opportunity to get involved with the club.
Come on down to the pool session this Tuesday from 8-9 and we can go through all the basics in advance, followed by drinks in Mac Turcaills.

We will be meeting at 10 a.m. On Sunday outside the Trinity boathouse (beside the rugby pitch, opposite side to the cricket pitch, near Players Theatre- look for the bus).

Wondering what to wear? Visit  http://board.dukc.net/topic731-what-to- … oeing.html and register for our message board while you're there. Any other questions, just mail captain@dukc.net or secretary@dukc.net .

Secondly, it's CHARITY BRIDGE JUMP TIME! On Thursday at 12:00 p.m. (note the time change) we will be pushing some unsuspecting freshers off O'Connell bridge in aid of Rag Week charities. Those of you that have been to a couple of pool sessions and river trips are welcome to do the jump- just contact one of the committee. Everyone else, please come along to take some snaps and donate to a good cause or donate here http://www.mycharity.ie/event/dukc_event.

It's very nearly time for the kayak VARSITIES. They will be taking place in Cork on Feb 18th -20th. There is an event suitable for everyone, especially beginners. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=1 … amp;ref=ts has most of the details of the parties and see http://www.kayakintervarsities.com/ for specifics on the competitive events.  Theme for Saturday night is “Fairy Tales” so get working on your costumes. It's an absolutely unmissable trip so keep that weekend free!

For those interested in long distance training, we have limited access to boats at the WWKC centre in Chapelizod. Get in touch with Shane at treasurer@dukc.net for more information.

Thursday training until varsities will be devoted to canoe polo training and we'll be selecting the varsities team shortly.

Look forward to seeing you all on the water,
Áine,

Secretary, DUKC

Hi folks,

To all those lovely people that signed up during fresher's week,
welcome. Congrats on 'seeing the light' that is the kayak club,
despite the lure of Doritos and Pot Noodles from other clubs. It
genuinely was the best decision you've ever made,..indisputable fact.
It'll be no time until you get truly hooked and find that the sound of
a heavy winter morning's rain fills you with joy.
To all the club's 'seasoned' and 'mature' members, a big welcome back, as ever.

First of all, you've got to check out today's METRO Herald (yes, we've
really hit the big time), page 5...
(http://e-edition.metroherald.ie/2010/09/27/). They covered the Bridge
Jump that took place on Friday. You may recognise the faces in the
'oh-so-flattering' photos,..or at least the bottom of their boats.

So, the fun really begins this week with our first pool sessions
taking place tomorrow, Tuesday, and Thursday (30th) in the sports
centre from 8 o'clock to 9. We do ask that everyone attend a lesson in
the pool before going on a river trip so that you can go through the
safety procedures and rescue drills. We will meet outside the sports
centre at 7:40 (we'll be the ones with the kayak paddle, surprisingly
enough) and head down to the pool together. **Please please try to
visit the sports centre at some stage beforehand to have your student
card registered by the receptionist as the process takes some time.**
All you need is a pair of swimming togs, hat (compulsory in the
pool-can be bought at the desk) and student card. (Note that I
restrained myself from adding something painfully cheesy like 'and
your super enthusiastic faces and award-winning smiles'.)

After the pool session we will take names for our river trip to Lucan
next Sunday, October 3rd. There will be a charge of €5 for the bus and
BBQ (yum), which we will collect at sign-up. Afterwards we will walk
down towards our state-of-the-art boathouse (near the rugby pitches on
campus) so that everyone can find the meeting point for Sunday
morning.
Tomorrow night we'll move on to Mac Turcaills for more FREE FOOD,
cheap pints and captivating conversation.
Details for the Sunday trip will follow.

Look forward to seeing you all on the water/ in the pub,
Feel free to mail us with any questions,

Áine

Hey folks,

It was great to meet you all over the past few days. Our shameless
publicity stunts continue at the kayak stand in Front Square,
including.... THE ANNUAL BRIDGE JUMP OFF O'CONNELL BRIDGE on Friday.
Come to the stand at around 13:30 and we'll head down to the bridge
together. Feel free to help push the lunatic members into the Liffey.
Pav afterwards for some hot whiskeys.

More immediately is the KAYAK NIGHT OUT tonight, Wednesday. We will be
meeting in Mac Turcaills pub, Townsend Street at eight (it's not far
from the Screen cinema- check out google maps ) for some FREE FOOD and
CHEAP PINTS- it's your chance to meet the fantastically friendly
committee and the current members and to ask us any kayak-related
questions you might have. We will continue on to Andrew's Lane Theatre
where we will join a load of other societies (including Cancer Soc,
Snowsports, Surfers, Rugby, Hockey etc.) for the chaos that will
inevitably ensue under the influence of discounted drinks (Jaegerbomb
Races- 3 for €10). Tickets are €4 with membership and we'll have some
available at the pub beforehand.
So make sure to come and join in the fun, tonight and Friday, or risk
social isolation for the rest of your college days .

Yours in paddling,
Áine,
Secretary

So the new year is finally starting...
We'll be at the stand in front square all week, if anyone would has a bit of free time and would like to do a few hours at the stand, we'd appreciate any help we can get. Just drop by, or if you're feeling particularly dedicated, send me a text or an email (captain@dukc.net) and I'll assign you a particular slot.
We will be selling tickets all week (well, until Wednesday) for Andrew's Lane Theatre on Wednesday night, tickets are for the bargain price of €5, and it promises to be one of the big nights of the week (cancer soc and some other sports clubs are also going along, but be sure to buy your tickets with us!)
And on Friday our annual bridge jump off O'Connell bridge will be taking place, you're all welcome along to our shameless publicity stunt.
Hope to see you at some stage this week
smile

Through cunning skill and perseverance we’ve set up a public calendar for everything DUKC related.

DUKC Calendar   big_smile

If you want to add it to your myzone page I think you can just click on the Google Calendar icon in the bottom right hand corner and if that doesn’t work just let me know your email address and I’ll add you so you can get it whenever you sign in to your google account….fancy.

Click on the events to get further details (ok yeah maybe that’s a bit obvious)

Obviously there's plenty more to be added but this is just to get the ball rolling.

Finally, if there’s anything happening which you think everyone should know about (like you have a free house/food/drink or yeah, anything kayaky) just let someone on the committee know and it'll be stuck up.

PS. Geoff/Gar/Dave, would it be awkward to make this a new subject?
